Shakira's "Can't Remember to Forget You feat. Rihanna" - Single Review

We all love to see powerful divas team up for one grand ole pop song. The release becomes an event of its own, no matter how great the song really is. Britney & Madonna. Lady Gaga & Beyonce. Now, add Shakira & Rihanna to the list. For the lead single off her upcoming fourth English language studio album, the Latin goddess enlisted the help of the reigning R&B princess for "Can't Remember to Forget You", a reggae-sounding, indie-pop inspired track written by the underrated Erik Hassle. Instead of hearing an explosion of dance beats and provocative lyrics, the two powerhouse artists have created a unique tune that certainly stands out from the crowd. Two pop artists. A renowned writer. A memorable sound. Seems like we have a sure fire hit on our hands.

"Can't Remember to Forget You" immediately catches the listener's attention with its Police-like intro, a sound radio airwaves are moving towards these days. Shakira kicks off the new release with her trademark vocals while she sings of a former flame that is hard to let go of. "When you look at me, the only memory is us kissing in the moonlight," she sings following a chorus we would normally expect Kelly Clarkson to be belting. For the second verse, Rihanna steps in and gives the song an extra layer while meshing her vocals well with Shakira.

The new track receives points for originality and surprise. Both divas have been known for their dance floor ready productions over the past few years, but "Can't Remember to Forget You" shows them both stepping out of their comfort zones for a personal, guitar-driven creation. It has a hint of Bruno Mars musicianship, a hint of Hassle's somber songwriting and the odd yet glorious vocal performance from Shakira. Rihanna is added for the star power, her vocals have never been the strongest, but it appears to be another, at least top ten, hit for both ladies.

A music video has already been completed, a release date currently unknown. If it is to be anything like the accompanying cover art, then we can expect some sort of a love affair between the two gorgeous artists. For a lead single, one to generate buzz, how are you feeling Shakira and Rihanna's "Can't Remember to Forget You"?
